Description
These traditional Italian Christmas cookies are a testament to the beauty of simple, wholesome ingredients like cold salted butter and farm-fresh eggs. With a delicate crunch and a melt-in-your-mouth texture, they are the perfect festive treat to share with loved ones during the holiday season.
Ingredients
- 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
- 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
- 1 Farm-Fresh Egg, slightly beaten
- 1 Farm-Fresh Egg Yolk
- 1/2 cup Cold Salted Butter, cubed
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking powder, then use a spoon to create a deep well in the center of the dry ingredients.
- Add the beaten egg, egg yolk, and cold cubed butter into the well and work the mixture by hand until large, shaggy clumps form.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently until a soft ball forms, then wrap in plastic and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- Roll the chilled dough to 1/4-inch thickness, cut into festive shapes, and place on a parchment-lined sheet to chill briefly while the oven preheats to 350°F (180°C).
- Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are barely golden, then cool for five minutes on the tray before moving to a wire rack.
Notes
To maintain the perfect shape of your festive cutouts, keep the dough chilled between batches and avoid over-handling the mixture with warm hands. If the dough feels too crumbly due to seasonal humidity changes, a very small splash of milk can help bring it together into a supple, workable consistency.
